The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) was created in 1994 to establish standards to promote the web’s evolution and ensue the various technologies work well together. Specifications include HTML, CSS, XML, XHTML and the Document Object Model (DOM). Designing in compliance with these standards will assure the longevity of your design.
