With growing compliance to web standards governments, corporations, and organizations have converted proprietary applications and data from private local and wide area networks to the medium of the web. In addition to giving us new methods to perform traditional tasks the growth of the world wide web has expanded our horizons with new things to do. Brand names like Google, WebEx, Amazon, YouTube, MySpace, Blogger and iPhone not only represent doing the things we do more efficiently but broadening the things we choose to do.
Taking Advantage of the Web
Often the spread of advanced technologies has meant ever increasing entry fees to play on this grand stage. When search blossomed in the 1990’s it was open to free website submissions. With the advent of paid inclusion started by LookSmart and pay per click [PPC] advertising search directory and index recognition has entered a realm that competes with and has surpassed other advertising mediums. However, ad revenues have funded a wide variety of new services such as the MySpace community, YouTube and the proliferation of social network sites. This, along with the proliferation of open source technologies has expanded the capabilities and reach of every individual venture.
